Tiny Snail

  • Jul. 17th, 2008 at 12:08 PM
I have some type of pine tree. Anyway, the type doesn't really matter. I got it as a present for Christmas a couple years ago and read up about it online. Found out that in it's natural habitat it lives in high humidity, so I spray it and water it well once a week and it's very happy!

Anyway, on occasion I see a snail. It's very tiny, it only seems to show up on the outside of the pot (that sits in a bowl to catch water that comes out of the bottom of the pot). It's tan in color and a little bigger than my pinky fingernail.

Is it harmful to my tree? Might it have come with the tree when I was given it?

I know slugs are harmful, so Im guessing it might be but my tree has shown no ill effects.

thanks:)

Slighly happier peace lilly?

So, I took some of the advice everyone gave me.

I took the peace lilly out of the dirt and soaked the roots. I got all of the dirt off the roots. It turned out it was one big plant and four small ones. I thought it was one big plant all this time. Three of the small ones were dying/ dead. So I pulled them out and tossed them. Most of the roots were healthy and there was no sign of rot. I cleaned the dead roots off.

I put the big one back in the pot I had it in before, and I put the smaller one in it's own pot. I watered them both with miracle grown, making sure to get the soil nice and wet. Then, I misted the leaves.

The small one is still a little floppy, but the main plant looks a lot better. Anything else I should do for them? They both are in front of windows, so, they get enough sunlight. Then, I think I'm just going to continue on the regular watering and feeding schedule.

QUESTION:
Does watering with tap or distilled water really not make that much of a difference? On all the websites I read they say that I should you distilled water. I've had a couple other people tell me it doesn't matter. I have three peace lillies, four orchids (phals), one brown spiderwart, lucky bamboo, aloe vera, lavendar, and small roses. I water them all with distilled water, and are on a set feeding schedule.

Sad peace lilly

I've had this peace lilly for over a year, and then I recently went on vacation. While I was on vacation my dad really overwater it and watered it with tap water. I water all of my plants with distilled water.

It kept losing leaves, so I repotted it. It's still losing leaves. They turn yellow, then brown and I can pull them right out. Like the base of the plant is mush or something. It use to be full and it had just started blooming new flowers. Now, it's very sparce, the new flowers died... some of them hadn't even unfolded yet. There are a couple of leaves that look okay, but it isn't soaking up water the way it use to. Normally I water it once a week and it has time to dry inbetween... but it took two weeks and the soil is still slighly damp.

So, I'm thinking it has root rot from being overwatered, and it initially didn't react well to being water with tap.

What do you guys think? Is there anything else I can do for it? Or should I just get rid of it? I would hate to. It was one of my favorite plants. =(

About

This journal is mostly a way to track my progress as I try my hand at urban gardening...well ok, ANY kind of gardening...for the first time. Having said that, I'm bound to make mistakes along the way and would appreciate any advice from fellow gardeners/houseplant lovers along the way. (Assuming anyone but me actually reads this.)

Someday I'll be a talented plant whisperer and will know the joy of a lush and healthy bounty of happy plants. In the meantime I'll muddle along and try not to kill every one I get my hands on.
